Help
Short answers first, then the steps for each platform. If something is missing, write to us.
Which version is for me?
Phone or tablet with Android: the APK, or Google Play once it is live. Windows PC: the installer, or the ZIP if you prefer no installer. Linux: the tar.xz with the installer script.
Is it safe to install an APK from a website?
Only from a source you trust, and only after checking the SHA256 checksum. Android warns about every app that does not come from Google Play; that warning is normal. Never switch off Google Play Protect for this.
How do I update?
Download the new version from the download page and install it over the old one. Your bookmarks and settings stay.
How do I remove it?
On Android, uninstall it like any other app. On Windows and Linux, see the steps for your platform below.
Where is my data?
On your device, in the browser profile. We have no account and no copy of it.
Android: install, update, remove
Requirements: Android 8.0 or newer.
- Download the APK from the download page.
- Compare the SHA256 checksum with the one on the download page (recommended; see below).
- Open the file. Android asks whether this app may install apps; allow it for this install.
- Tap Install. If Google Play Protect runs a check, let it finish.
- Open Anda Browser. To make it your default browser: Settings → Apps → Default apps → Browser.
Update: the app does not check for updates by itself. Install the newer APK over the installed one; your data stays.
Remove: uninstall it like any app. Its local data is removed with it.
Windows: install, update, remove
- Download the installer (SFX) or the ZIP from the download page.
- Compare the SHA256 checksum (see below). If it does not match, do not run the file.
- Installer: run it, choose the folder (by default Program Files) and tick the Start menu or desktop shortcut if you want one. ZIP: extract the folder anywhere you like.
- If Windows shows a SmartScreen notice, continue only if the checksum matched.
- Start Anda Browser from the folder.
Your bookmarks, history and settings are kept in your Windows user folder (AppData), not in the program folder. This is true for the installer and the ZIP alike: the ZIP is not a portable version.
%APPDATA%\AndaVision\AndaBrowser
Update: Anda Browser does not update itself. Download the new version from this site and install it over the old one, or replace the extracted folder. Your data stays.
Remove: Installer version: Settings → Apps → Anda Browser → Uninstall. ZIP version: delete the folder. Your data in AppData stays in both cases until you delete it yourself.
Linux: install, update, remove
Requirements: a 64-bit Linux (x86_64 or arm64) with Python 3. No root rights are needed: everything is installed in your home folder. Tested on Wayland desktops.
- Download the tar.xz from the download page and compare the SHA256 checksum.
- Extract it, then run the installer script from the extracted folder. It puts Anda Browser into ~/.local/opt and adds it to your application menu, with a "New window" and a "Private window" action:
tar -xf AndaBrowser-<version>.tar.xz cd AndaBrowser-<version> python3 install.py install ./andabrowser - Start Anda Browser from your application menu. It does not make itself the default browser; the installer prints the command for that.
Update: download the new tar.xz and run the same install command again. It only touches its own files. Your profile stays.
Remove: run the script with uninstall. It removes only the files it installed; your profile in ~/.config stays until you delete it.
python3 install.py uninstall
~/.config/andavision/andabrowser
How to compute a SHA256 checksum
Run the command for your system in the folder where the file is, and compare the result with the checksum on the download page. Every character must match.
Windows (PowerShell):
Get-FileHash .\<file> -Algorithm SHA256
Linux:
sha256sum <file>
Android: the simplest way is to check the APK on a computer before copying it to the phone. Some file managers can also show a SHA256 checksum.
Where your data is
Bookmarks, history, site icons and settings are stored only on your device, in the browser profile. Passwords too: Anda Browser can save and fill them itself, and on Android you can also use the system's autofill service. There is no account and nothing is uploaded to us. The privacy page lists the connections the browser makes on its own.
